Owned and operated by the Toronto Port Authority, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is an important part of the transportation infrastructure on Toronto’s waterfront.
It is the only airport located within Toronto’s boundaries, making it convenient for both business and leisure travellers. More than two million people travelled through Billy Bishop each year, and that number is expected to grow. Ninety six per cent of passengers rate their experience as positive in customer surveys, and in 2013, the airport was recognized by SkyTrax as one of the world’s best small airports (under 5 million passengers), based on customer surveys.
Porter Airlines and Air Canada both fly in and out of the airport, offering service between Toronto and 18 cities in Canada and the U.S., with connections to more than 80 international destinations.
A ferry runs from the foot of Bathurst Street every 15 minutes, connecting foot passengers and vehicle traffic with the airport terminal. We are currently building a state-of-the-art underground pedestrian tunnel, scheduled to open in 2014, which will make getting to Billy Bishop even quicker and easier. See our dedicated tunnel website
for more information on this exciting addition to our airport services.
Founded in 1937 and officially opened in 1939, Billy Bishop is uniquely located in the midst of a busy urban neighbourhood. Working with our neighbours and protecting the local environment are important considerations in all aspects of airport business. A Community Liaison Committee was established in 2011 to help expand engagement with the local residential and business communities. Noise monitoring and a sophisticated Noise Management Office enable us to mitigate airport noise and respond quickly to community concerns.
In addition to our importance to travellers, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is also an important economic engine, contributing significantly to the economy of the Greater Toronto Area:
- $1.9 billion in annual economic output;
- 5,700 jobs, 1,700 of which are directly connected to the airport;
- $290 million in wages;
- $57 million in generated tax revenue and payments-in-lieu of taxes.
