A recent survey released today by the Toronto Port Authority (TPA) reveals that 90 per cent of Toronto residents “agree” that “Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is an asset to Toronto,” up from 87 per cent in August 2013. Respondents also agreed that the airport is “great for the Toronto economy” (88%) and that the island airport makes “a great first impression for visitors” (77%).

The Toronto Port Authority (TPA) announced today that it will now join the City of Toronto in its review of Porter Airlines’ proposal, with a focus on any and all outstanding issues as outlined in the recently-released City Staff report. The TPA has been involved throughout the earlier review process, working with City staff upon request. At the request of City Council, the TPA has provided $1.2 million to fund all of the fees associated with the City’s independent subject matter experts to support this detailed study. The TPA supports the timeline established by the Executive Committee of City Council for a resolution, where possible, of any and all outstanding matters related to the Porter proposal.

The Toronto Port Authority (TPA) has received a copy of the staff report prepared for Toronto City Council regarding the April 2013 proposal tabled by Porter Airlines. The TPA’s position remains that it will not consider any change of use to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport until a determination is first made by the elected representatives on Toronto City Council regarding Porter's proposed changes to the 1983 Tripartite Agreement. Until Council makes a determination, the cost of additional studies of Porter’s proposal would be unwarranted.

These improvements are part of the TPA’s commitment to the community to enhance safety and enjoyment of the neighbourhood. The Toronto Port Authority Board and the City of Toronto reached an agreement last summer, passed by City Council on July 12, 2011, that will see the City of Toronto put a new water main and replacement sewage mains in the pedestrian tunnel that the TPA is building to the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. This City Council-approved agreement specifically included provisions to improve traffic management on Eireann Quay and a three year lease of the Canada Malting site to the TPA for such purposes.
