New Software At Terminal Operations Improves Customer Service
The Port of Toronto is installing new software at its terminal operations aimed at further improving customer service. The system, designed by Netstar Solutions Inc. of Toronto, is called THTS (for 'Toronto Harbour Terminal System').
"The project is being implemented in three phases," said Mike Doran, Director of Port Operations, "the first phase, which was completed in March, essentially revolutionized documentation and inventory control by creating entirely electronic formats."
Mr. Doran noted that this had the immediate effect of speeding up processing while eliminating errors, thus turning trucks around faster. "If there is a documentation error, then the computer won't release the shipment: that's a pretty good incentive to get it right!"
The second phase of the project, which is currently in the design process, and will be completed by year-end, involves providing customers with better access to information regarding their cargoes and inventories, shipment histories, etc.
"This really takes us into the realm of e-commerce," said Mr. Doran, "there is an incredible amount of data to keep track of, both on our part and that of the customers. Now customers will be able to have access and electronic feedback any time they need it. They can have instant updates in their inventories."
The third phase of the program -- which will be completed during the first quarter of 2000, involves the design and implementation of EDI and bar-coding. "This will be a tremendous time-saver for customers," said Mr. Doran.
"It will allow electronic communications and inquiry, electronic clearance by Customs, electronic ships' manifests, and releases by customers, etc.
"The Port of Toronto is dedicated to continually improving its customer service," said Mr. Doran, "the Toronto Harbour Terminal System is one more way we're demonstrating our commitment to being on the leading edge."
