Toronto City Centre Airport: A History
1920's to 1940's | 1950's - 1970's | 1980's to present
1982
  • August: Federal Government announces approval of a STOL commuter service between Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. The service was to have been operated by Canavia Transit Inc. of Montreal and City Centre Airways of London, subject to their meeting the Canadian Transport Commission's licensing requirements. This service never got off the ground. However, Air Atonabee, one of the scheduled airline carriers operating out of the Toronto Island Airport, was reorganized as City Express, which subsequently began a STOL service.
  • Brian Holmes buys Central Airways from the Wong brothers (Tom and Bob).
1984
  • September: City Express begins STOL passenger service. During it's existence the airline flew to Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, and Newark, NJ (New York).
1985

  • The back-up ferry Windmill Point is purchased by Ontario's Ministry of Transportation and Communications.
1988
  • Airport services (water, hydro, gas, and sewer), ramp and apron improvements. Construction of new water system for both fire-fighting and domestic use.
  • October: new control tower opens.
1989
  • Improvements to airport including: installation of MLS, Hangar 4A (Ministry of Health), new seaplane ramp, dockwall stabilization. MLS is the first fully operational system at a Canadian airport.
  • Airport's 50th Anniversary.

1990

  • Air Ontario starts service to London, Ottawa, Montreal and Newark (New York).
  • April: completion of new 10,000-ft. airport maintenance/ERS firehall facility. Second passenger terminal building put into operation.
  • December: NDB/DME instrument approach published for the first time in the Jeppesen manual.
1991
  • Hangar 5 and 6 built. Shell's first Aerocentre in Eastern Canada.
  • Apron expanded.
  • February: City Express goes out of business.
1994
  • November: official name change to Toronto City Centre Airport to better reflect the location of the airport.
1996
  • Construction of stopways on Runway 08/26 and introduction of all stage 3 Turboprops.
1997
  • Permanent glycol mitigation system installed on main airport apron for de-icing aircraft
1998
  • Microwave landing system taken out of service.
  • Conventional instrument landing system (glyde slope, localizer and DME) installed on Runway 08.
  • Localizer -- DME cloud breaking approach installed for Runway 26.
  • City of Toronto approves bridge to Airport.
  • U.S. Airways Express starts service to TCCA from Syracuse, and White Plains, U.S.A.
1999
  • On June 8, 1999, The Toronto Port Authority ("TPA") is established under the Canada Marine Act to replace the Toronto Harbour Commissioners.
