In 2012 work began on a pedestrian tunnel to link Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA) to the mainland. But this wouldn’t be the first time that a tunnel of this sort was undertaken. The difference this time was that steam power would not be used to till the soil adjacent to the Western Gap.

Excavation of Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel Reaches Halfway Mark

 The Toronto Port Authority (TPA) has announced that excavation of the pedestrian tunnel to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has passed the halfway mark. The tunnel’s excavation began in early July and is set for completion fall 2013.

Work on the underground pedestrian walkway that will link Toronto to the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is underway. Take a walk through the mud and mess of one of the 185 metre ancillary tunnels, which will eventually be filled with concrete to support the main pedestrian passageway. The Toronto Port Authority Board and the City of Toronto reached an agreement last summer, passed by City Council on July 12, 2011, that will see the City of Toronto put a new water main and replacement sewage mains in the pedestrian tunnel that the TPA is building to the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. This City Council-approved agreement specifically included provisions to improve traffic management on Eireann Quay and a three year lease of the Canada Malting site to the TPA for such purposes.
